Coffee Is Not an Energy Plan (Do This Instead)

Coffee Is Not an Energy Plan (Do This Instead)
Quick answerMost healthy adults can have up to about 400 mg of caffeine a day, roughly four cups of coffee. But caffeine stays in your body for hours, so most men sleep better if the last cup is before 2 pm. Coffee can sit on top of good sleep, but it cannot replace it.

Coffee feels like energy. It is closer to a loan. It blocks the signal that tells your brain it is tired. The tiredness is still there, and it comes back when the caffeine fades.

That is fine in small doses. The trouble starts when coffee becomes the whole plan.

What caffeine really does

Caffeine blocks adenosine, a chemical that builds up the longer you are awake and makes you sleepy. Block it and you feel alert. When the caffeine clears, the adenosine is still there.

The half life of caffeine averages about five hours, but it varies a lot from person to person. A cup at 4 pm can still be partly active at bedtime.

How much is too much

The FDA says up to about 400 mg a day, roughly four cups of brewed coffee, is not generally linked to negative effects in most healthy adults. Some people feel jittery or anxious on far less.

DrinkCaffeine, approximate
Espresso, 1 shot60 to 80 mg
Brewed coffee, 240 ml80 to 100 mg
Black tea40 to 70 mg
Energy drink, 1 can80 to 160 mg
Cola, 1 can30 to 40 mg

Energy drinks often add large amounts of sugar and stack caffeine fast. They are the easiest way to overshoot.

Signs caffeine is working against you

  • You need coffee to feel normal, not to feel sharp
  • You fall asleep late, then wake up tired
  • You feel jittery, anxious or have a racing heart
  • Your afternoon crash gets worse each week

A smarter way to use coffee

  1. Drink water first. Rehydrate before the first cup.
  2. Have coffee after breakfast. Not on an empty stomach if it upsets you.
  3. Set a cutoff. Last caffeine before 2 pm for most people. Move it earlier if you sleep badly.
  4. Cap the total. Stay under 400 mg, lower if you feel anxious.
  5. Do a 7 day test. Move the cutoff to noon for a week and track your sleep and mood.

What to do instead for energy

  • Sleep seven to nine hours
  • Get daylight in the first hour
  • Eat protein at breakfast
  • Walk for 10 minutes after lunch
  • Use a short nap of 10 to 20 minutes, before 3 pm

Careful

If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, anxiety or take medication, ask your doctor how much caffeine is safe for you. Pregnant women have lower limits.
